In a Press Release Baxano, Inc. has announced the first patient enrollment for its post-market STRiDE (Spondylothesis Treated with an iO-Flex System Enabled Decompression) study. Baxano, Inc. is a medical device company specializing in tools for lumbar decompression procedures

The STRiDE study  will evaluate the effectiveness of the iO-Flex system in treating patients with moderate to severe spinal stenosis with stable grade 1 degenerative spondylothesis compared to the current standard of care.

GliaSite.jpgFDA Clearance for GliaSite Brachytherapy Balloon Catheter for Brain Cancer

In a News Release IsoRay, Inc. announced that the FDA has cleared its GliaSite® radiation therapy system, a balloon catheter device used in the treatment of brain cancer.

The catheter has a dual balloon system, with the inner balloon designed to hold a liquid radioactive source and the outer balloon providing an extra safety layer in case of damage to the inner balloon. It is inserted into the surgical cavity after tumor removal and inflated with radioactive liquid. This way, high doses of radiation can be delivered locally at the tumor site and its surroundings where recurrence is most likely.

Medtronic Launches Kyphon Xpander II IBT System

In a News Release Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE:MDT) announced the commercial release of the Kyphon Xpander II Inflatable Bone Tamp (IBT) and the Kyphon Inflation Syringe - the Kyphon Xpander II IBT System – for the treatment of vertebral compression fractures with minimally invasive Kyphon® Balloon Kyphoplasty.

During the minimally invasive balloon kyphoplasty procedure, a needle and tube are used to create a small pathway into the fractured bone. Orthopedic balloons are inserted and then inflated inside the fractured bone in an attempt to return it to its correct position. Inflation of the balloons creates cavities in the vertebral body that are filled with bone cement, forming an “internal cast” to stabilize the fracture.

In a Press Release, St. Jude Medical, Inc. (NYSE:STJ) announces the study results on the safety and efficacy of peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) of the occipital nerve for the management of pain and disability associated with chronic migraine.

The study shows statistically significant improvement across multiple measures including a reduction in the number of headache days per month and improvement in quality of life. This is the largest clinical study to date evaluating the use of PNS via an implanted medical device for the treatment of chronic migraine.
